Hail Cesar – Discover Lanzarote Culture

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Around the world there are lots of wonderful places to enjoy a holiday.  But not many of these destinations cannot come close to Lanzarote for cultural attractions.  As this small Canary Island located off the African coast is the birthplace of a famous artist called César Manrique.  Who created unique cultural attractions and who exerted an enormous influence on the islands development.

As a popular holiday destination for the beach crowd Lanzarote has an often missed rich cultural background as well for anyone wishing to explore it,and with an excellent choice of Lanzarote villas to rent there will be no shortage of holiday accommodation if you book early enough

It´s impossible to visit Lanzarote without coming across the name of César Manrique.  His presence is ubiquitous – right from the airport which he had a hand in designing through to the white colour that all of the apartments and holiday villas in Lanzarote are painted.  And it also thanks largely to him that the island is not covered in high rise buildings and apartment complexes.  Whilst advertising billboards are also noticeable by their absence.

Born in Arrecife, the islands capital, in 1919, Manrique fell in love with the island from a tender age.  Thanks to the fact that his parents owned a holiday home in the beautiful northern beach resort of Famara, where they would all spend long summers together.  With the young Manrique exploring rock pools and splashing in the tide, where he would delight in seeing the reflection of the Famara cliffs that flanked the bay.

Just as many youngsters do, Manrique had itchy feet and wanted to travel the world and study art in Europe and elswhere in the world, where he could gain a much wider experience. He did exactly as planned and became a champion of the island.

Whilst the travel industry was developing well but still in it’s early days, it was generally the middle and upper class that enjoyed the luxury of travel with a majority of the population holidaying in their home countries. However the travel industry was about to go through a heady paradigm as the package holiday market was born making travel affordable to the masses. Of course the problem here was one of infrastructure and accommodation, and around the world a manic construction effort began to ensure there was enough accommodation to house the rapidly growing throngs of travellers eager to explore the attraction of foreign travel which was an extreme threat to the natural balance of Lanzarote.

Manrique was appalled at the potential threat to the islands culture when he returned from his travels but at the same time, Manrique also accepted that his fellow islanders could not continue to live off just fishing and agriculture alone.  So Manrique also started work on the creation of a series of seven cultural attractions that would become the mainstay of the island tourist industry to this day.  Encompassing brilliant works of architecture such as the Jameos del Agua and the Mirador del Rio.  Whilst also campaigning tirelessly for a retrained and sensible approach to construction.

Cheap Villa Holidays In Sunny Lanzarote

Monday, May 17th, 2010

The little island of Lanzarote offers big value for money for anyone seeking a self catering holiday on a budget.  As it is home to a very large selection of privately owned accommodation – normally available at prices that just cannot be matched in other parts of Spain.  As here owners enjoy a year round rental season – as well as a reliable flow of tourist guests.

Along with the other six Canary Islands Lanzarote enjoys a fantastic semi-tropical climate, delivering clement weather whatever the time of year. Thanks to its geographical situation close to the Tropic of Cancer and just off the coast of Africa.  This is married with very low levels of rainfall, together creating a dry and arid terrain – desert like in places - which is largely devoid of trees and vegetation.

Lanzarote - Not Just A Volcanic Rock

But the island also has plenty of more conventional beauty away from the volcanic region, where it is much like many other island destinations.  There are around 100 beaches adorning the coastline and visitors can choose from three modern and well appointed holiday resorts. Which is also the location most of the top choices of Lanzarote villas ,holiday apartments and holiday bungalows.

The main resort on the island is called Puerto del Carmen – which is situated in close proximity to the main airport and which boasts plenty of good quality beaches.  This in part explains its popularity with visitors – who have been enjoying holidays here since the 1970´s.  Whilst also boasting a great selection of bars and restaurants and plenty of nightlife.

Typically Holiday Holiday villas in Puerto del Carmen are in demand as result – with prices starting at about the €500 mark for properties with private pools.

Second in terms of visitor numbers to Puerto del Carmen Playa Blanca is the islands fastest growing destination.  And this has expanded enormously since the first hotels and villas were built here back in the 1990´s, the resort has become a byword for good value accommodation. With standard holiday villas in Playa Blanca with swimming pools available for rent from as little as €400 per week – depending of course on the time of year. A selection of Playa Blanca holiday villas are available at this website.

Lanzarote can be enjoyed as a holiday destination at any time of the year.  But some months are better than others – with the most unreliable weather usually experienced during February and March.

Not all holiday activity is restricted to these main areas and additional resort areas include Costa Teguise which is actually just about the most northerly resort around the island and is certainly just a enjoyable 12-15 minute cab or coach ride from the main airport, and not forgetting the islands most up-to-date high end resort of Puerto Calero which is probably unashamedly targetted to the exclusive end of the family vacation market place having an superb selection of boutiques. and naturally as probably would be expected from a resort of this stature a remarkable 400 plus berth marina if you’re lucky enough to be able to vacation here on your current very own personal motor or sailing luxury yacht.

If you visit the island don’t just head for the beaches though as this wonderful island has a wealth of attractions that you simply must see for example The Cactus Garden -The Cactus Garden is a plant lovers paradise.  And sensively it is located right in the heart of what was once Lanzarote´s cactus country.  As this plant was originally grown by islanders in order to attract the cochineal beetle, which was in turn dried and crushed and used as a natural dye-stuff.

Fantastic Vacations In On The Isle Of Harris

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Is your family deliberating about having a short break in Great Britain? Although nearly all visitors to Great Britain decide to stay in popular destinations such as London, others would rather have a vacation in Scotland. In the following article I describe the Isle of Harris and the reasons why it is such a great destination for vacations.

Even though London may feature some of the most impressive galleries and museums in the UK  and some of the most widely known attractions  the capital city of England can not appeal to all types of visitor.

Some tourists prefer vacations which are more relaxed and less hectic while other people much prefer vacations with a little more action for example sports vacations. Interestingly the island of Harris, in Scotland’s Western Isles (which are also know as the Outer Hebrides), appeals both types of person.

Like many other folk spending most of my summer vacation on the beach has never really been my ideal vacation. Please do not get the wrong idea, my family and I often spend time on sandy beaches, and Harris definitely has some of the most amazing beaches in Scotland (and the UK), however, I also enjoy spending time elsewhere while on a vacation. I thoroughly enjoy taking in the atmosphere, I like to sample the local food and culture. If the truth be known each year I like to experience something new and I go to great lengths trying to discover something totally different. Most probably this is why I so thoroughly enjoy visiting the Hebridean island known as the Isle of Harris and why I often choose to book self catering houses on the Isle of Harris.

One of the main reasons folk visit the Isle of Harris is to enjoy the the landscape and culture of the islands. The Isle of Harris culture has, through the generations been subtly influenced by the Celtic, Norse, Scottish and English races. These days in general most people speak in the Gaelic language and though some speak English, it is commonly their second language. The people of the Isle of Harris are amongst the most friendly on the planet and their hospitality is known throughout the word. The Harris folk are incredibly proud of the amazingly beautiful Harris countryside and go to some length to keep the island tidy so it is immensely important not to leave any litter behind.

It is incredibly important to keep in mind that rubbish doesn’t only make the island appear a mess it is also incredibly dangerous to native wildlife.

A further vital thing to Keep in mind is that the Isle of Harris roads are not the same as elsewhere in Britain in some areas you will need to traverse single track roads and you will often be forced to used passing places to let oncoming traffic past and also let traffic from behind to pass too. Simply stop on the left of the road. If you are faced with a very large vehicle wishing to get past and the passing place is to the right hand side of the road you can tuck yourself into it to allow the big vehicle pass more easily but be careful not to drive off the edge of the road too much.

I hope that artcile above sufficiently interests you in having a vacation on the Isle of Harris. Many visitors the Scotland’s Hebrides choose to stay in two vacation destinations. There are a small number of other islands to visit including North Uist, Lewis and South Uist. Why not consider staying in a self catering house on Harris for a week and then stay in a room in a North Uist hotel or a hotel on South Uist for the rest of your vacation?

U.S. Virgin Islands - Why St. John Is Worth Visiting

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

The U.S. Virgin Islands attract millions of tourists each and every year, and with good reason too. They offer all of the luxury and beauty of the Caribbean, but with the security and safety that comes with being governed by the U.S. Of the three major U.S. Virgin Islands, St. John tends to get the least attention, but this is because it has withstood the temptation to commercialize itself, and not because it is a less worthy destination than St. Croix or St. Thomas, which are the other two major Islands that make up the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In fact, if you want a relaxing time in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and to immerse yourself in natural and unspoilt surroundings, then St. John stands out as the obvious choice. With two-thirds of the Island designated as National Park, it is the most undeveloped, easygoing and laid back of the large U.S. Virgin Islands. That is not to say that it is the ‘dull’ choice - far from it. There is plenty to do and see there if you want to spend a a few days away from one of its many stunning beaches.

Of particular note, and something which should not be missed under any circumstances, is the Virgin Islands National Park. It includes hiking trails and a wonderful range of wildlife, some of which is unique to the Island. The beaches within the National Park, are amongst the best to be found in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and there are enough of them for you to visit a different one on each day of your stay.

The main towns are Cruz Bay and Coral Bay, and staying in one of these two places allows easy access to restaurants, bars and shops. There are lots of hotels and resorts to choose from, which range from the quaint to the exceedingly lavish. Booking early is always advisable as finding anywhere to stay at the last minute is normally impossible.

Luxury resorts tend to be the preferred choice. Most lead directly on to the beach, offer amazing views, and provide full guest services. You literally would not have to leave the resort if you did not want to. For those looking for tranquility and seclusion, there are few places in the world that can match it.

Gay Accommodations Are Almost Everywhere

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

People that are gay face challenges all the time with things in life. When it comes to travelling they used to have a lot of problems finding places that provided gay accommodations. This is no longer a problem. Now there are places that cater to the gay population in this manner.

This is a great relief to the homosexuals that are around. This is something that the gay people of today are thrilled to have. Having gay accommodations give them the ability to travel with a lot less worry then they used to have. People have changed the attitudes that they have towards homosexuals a lot, but there are still things that people do not approve of, travelling together as a gay couple is one such thing.

Browsing the internet you will see that there are many websites that are devoted to gay  people. They give them advice on a variety of things and offer vacations strictly for people  that are gay. No longer to they have to worry about travelling together as a couple and  having insults hurled at them.

The list of places that offer gay accommodation is extensive. There are tons of options of gay hotels at many destinations for  them that were not available to them just a short time ago. The gay population is very  excited with this change.

Being gay is not the horrid thing like it was years ago. People are very more accepting of  this then they were. This is being shown through the websites and other services that are  being made with the homosexual’s needs being the focus.

It is all a matter of choice what type of holiday that you and your partner want to take.  Think of something, then look around the internet and see what gay accommodations are  available for the destination that you have decided on. There is bound to be something that  will be available.  No matter if you want to camp, go on a cruise, or take a holiday overseas, there are gay accommodations all over the world now that can allow you and your partner the holiday that you dreamed of without the fear of being hassled by others.

Perth Vacations: Things To Do

Monday, April 19th, 2010

The town of Perth is also widely called the ‘Gateway to the Highlands’. Sited on the River Tay’s banks, the town of Perth was the capital of Scotland and during medieval times the bustling small town was known locally as Saint Johnstoun (St. John’s Town). The name, or, in the Gaelic language, Peairt, derives from the word of the Picts which has the meaning of a wood or copse. Today  this idyllic small market town is a superb location as a base for a Scottish touring vacation with a copious number of Perth bed and breakfasts to choose from ranging from the low-priced establishment to the amazingly pricey first class five star luxury country mansion hotels and the likes with mountains of services and facilities.

Once upon a time the town was an extremely successful port mainly dealing in the export of linen, whisky, leather and bleached products. Today the tourist industry provides much needed cash and many jobs for the young of the area who gladly take up employment in the increasing number of hotels in Perth and other related businesses.

One thing about Perth that is astoundingly difficult for any other town or city to top is the surrounding countryside which is much more than simply attractive, words fail. Sporadically situated are a great many attractions including stately homes, castles, historical buildings and fortified houses.

Only a little west of Perth is the fine medieval structure of Huntingtower Castle. Situated in amazing the castle has, over the centuries undergone numerous minor alterations and redevelopments. Huntingtower started out as a pair of clearly separate tower houses but situated rather closely together.

About 3 miles away, from the town of Perth, one will discover the sixteenth century Elcho Castle, which has the most breathtaking views of the River Tay. The castle dates back to around fifteen seventy when the Wemyss family commissioned it’s construction who remained in possession until the year nineteen twenty nine. It is now in the capable hands of Historic Scotland.

One of the most well known visitor attractions, not a great distance away from Perth, is one of the finest country homes in the Scottish nation, Scone Palace. Here people can learn about the fascinating history of Scone Palace, the place where the early kings of Scotland were crowned such as, Robert The Bruce who took to the throne in 1306.

Other than the attractions mentioned above the town of Perth has many many more, which means that it is an excellent place for a vacation for the family. Great Memories Can Be Made Of A Camping Vacation In Beautiful North Carolina

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

A memorable trip awaits if you choose camping in North Carolina. North Carolina offers places to enjoy that have great natural beauty. Charming historical towns are little gems to savor on the way. Camp goers unfamiliar with the state should know there are three distinct regions: the mountains to the west, the heartland of the Piedmont and the Atlantic coast in the east. With the Atlantic to the east, North Carolina has Tennessee on its western border, Virginia on its north, and Georgia and South Carolina to the south. There are many, many locations to choose, offering campers of all types something they would like. These include the Linville Gorge, Mount Mitchell, the Blue Ridge Parkway, national forests, waterfalls, hiking trails, bike trails and horse trails amongst the sites to enjoy.

Where to camp in NC

As there so many options, the best way to limit the possibilities is to decide what type of camping trip you are looking for. Do you want to make it as natural as possible? Would you prefer available showers and water? Do cabins for rent appeal? Do you have an RV you would like to take with you to a recreational vehicle park? Are there special events you want to visit as well?

Helpful tips

You should do your research to make the most of this opportunity. Going online opens up a whole host of sources, including the state’s useful resources that can guide you in planning your trip. Planning ahead will certainly improve the quality of your experience.

Please note that if you have a mind to use objects to claim a campsite position, they are not recognized as devices to be used for this purpose in national parks. You need to set up tents. Any objects you use to make your claim will be removed.

Locating the destination of choice

Use your computer to access the many websites that will help you decide amongst the wide number of choices available. General, specific and individual website resources help you find what type of campsites you are looking for and then to help narrow your options. Please keep in mind that if tent camping is your choice, there is a book that has greater detail. The book’s title is:The Best In Tent Camping: The Southern Appalachian & Smoky Mountains. It lists many known and unknown sites(depending on the prospective camper’s familiarity with the state), such as the Linville Falls Campground in Spruce Pine, NC; Camping & Cabins on Cape Lookout National Seashore in Harkers Island, NC; Mount Mitchell State Park in Asheville, NC and many other possible destinations. No matter how choosy the camper this book illustrates that there are savory offerings available.

How to make the most of your experience

Think ahead. Plan and prepare. You will have a camping vacation that memories are made of with just a little forethought.

Tunisia Holidays Offer So Much For You To Experience

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Tunisia holidays are so popular because they offer a varied geography, including attractive Mediterranean beachfronts, spectacular mountain ranges and scenic deserts, and provide the perfect mix of African, Muslim and Western cultures.

Tunisia has the Mediterranean Sea on the north and east sides of the country, and those are the most popular areas for beach lovers. Besides a beachfront holiday though, Tunisia holidays offer a variety of things to do.

This includes visiting ancient ruins and some of the picturesque and interesting villages throughout Tunisia. The Sousse Medina, the Tunis Medina, the Le Bardo-Bardo National Museum and the Ribat of Monastir are just some of the many popular tourist attractions.

The northern part of Tunisia has the Mediterranean influence, while the inner villages have a more ancient cultural diversity. Roman ruins and Turkish mosques are as common as some of the cathedrals and museums that offer a diverse glimpse of Tunisia over the centuries.

Whether you take a trek through the beautiful mountains or ride a camel in the desert, you can expect to see medieval walled cities, Roman ruins, sweeping sand dunes and underground dwellings that housed ancient civilizations.

You can dine on lamb skewers from a Berber oven or sushi from the Mediterranean, but there are a variety of cuisines to try. Couscous is a national dish made from semolina grain and boiled in fish or meat juices, so be sure and try it while in Tunisia.

The best time to visit is in either spring or autumn, when the weather is fine and clear, without being unbearably hot. The weather is actually pretty good all year though, but most people find the intense summer heat too much for them.

Are you looking for more useful advice on taking luxury holidays in Tunisia? Why not take a moment to browse our pages of information all about Tunisian holidays at http://www.tunisianholidays.co.uk and get prepared.

Visit The Indian Paradise Of Cochin

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Cochin, also referred to as Kochi, is a tropical paradise of waving palm trees and sandy beaches. It is located in the Indian state of Kerala, which is a narrow strip of coastal territory in the south of India that stretches down the Western Ghats, and up in to the Arabian sea.

Cochin is cleaner and calmer than many Indian tourist destinations. In fact, you would be forgiven for mistaking the feel and look of the place for a small, traditional European city. The influence of the British, Dutch and Portuguese, who all ruled there during past centuries, can still be felt in many aspects of life, such as social attitudes, architecture and infrastructure.

It is a religious place, and people who live there have varied ethnicity. You will find Hindus, Muslims, Jews and Christians living in harmony and celebrating all festivals enthusiastically. All places of worship exist there (temples, mosques, churches and even synagogues), and there are some really fantastic examples of them, dating back hundreds of years.

The most famous landmark in Cochin is a set of Chinese fishing nets at harbor. These fishing nets are over a hundred years old, yet they are still used on a daily basis. Not only can you watch the fishermen work, it is also possible for you to join in and help them should you wish to do so. There are, of course, lots of other worthwhile sights there too, more than enough to occupy you for a week or two.

The coastline that extends from Cochin has some of the most exotic beaches in the whole of India. The coconut lined sands and turquoise blue sea, make for a really sensenational and idylic backdrop for you take in whilst you relax. They are unspoilt too, as there are typically just a handful of shacks and restaurants along the shores, so you can enjoy the surroundings just as nature created them.

As for where to stay, you should consider one of the many homestays there, which provide a much needed source of extra income to the locals, while at the same time giving you a chance to experience the real Cochin. With homestay accommodation, you get to stay at the home of a local family, who will take care of you and will ensure that all of your needs are catered for.
